- While some large companies are making headlines with high-profile return-to-office campaigns, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) present a different, more grounded picture: According to an ifo survey (March 2025), about a quarter of employees in Germany now work in hybrid arrangements – over 34 percent in the service sector and just under 17 percent in manufacturing. These figures have remained stable for years, showing that hybrid work is no longer a transitional model but an established part of everyday working life. Yet in practice, many questions remain: How can remote collaboration succeed? How can commitment and cohesion be built without physical presence? This is where the HyWoNa research project comes in. Initiated by FIR at RWTH Aachen University, the project team is creating a digital Hybrid Work Navigator. This tool is to support SMEs in designing hybrid work models that are effective, structured, and sustainable. The navigator is designed to provide guidance and provide concrete, practical solutions.
