Digitale Daten statt Dokumentenflut / Digital Data Instead of a Flood of Documents

  • To date, a fully functioning circular economy for plastic packaging has been hindered by the lack of reliable information across the value chain. The COPPA research project demonstrates how the Digital Product Passport (DPP) can establish a central data foundation to address this gap. The DPP enables recycling-relevant information to be systematically recorded, digitally accessible, and shared across the entire circular value creation ecosystem. This level of transparency is essential for high-quality recycling and the safe reuse of packaging materials. As such, the Digital Product Passport represents a key technology – and a necessary prerequisite – for the transition from a linear to a circular packaging economy.

COPPA
Open Circular-Collaboration-Platform for Sustainable Food Packaging from Plastics

Duration: 15.07.2022 – 14.07.2025
Funding no.: 281A707C20
Funding: Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft (BMEL)
Promoters: Bundesanstalt für Landwirtschaft und Ernährung (BLE)

Funding information:
The project was supported by funds of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) based on a decision of the Parliament of the Federal Republic of Germany via the Federal Office for Agriculture and Food (BLE) under the innovation support programme.

Project information:
The aim of the research project ‘COPPA’ was to develop an open and scalable Circular Collaboration Platform (CCP) with functionalities that create benefits for recyclers, plastic reprocessors / converters, packaging manufacturers and food retailers.

Expected Result:
The project result is a practical demonstrator that is freely accessible to all companies in the entire food chain at the end of the implementation phase.

Benefits for the Target Group:
The CCP enables an accurate and efficient exchange of information on the recyclate content and quality of plastic packaging. At the same time, by linking relevant environmental information, 'COPPA' makes the increase in individual and industry-related sustainability performance calculable and verifiable for well-founded communication.
