Circularity as a Driver of Resilience and Competitiveness (2026)
Harfensteller, Stephanie ; Behnam, Sarah ; Panagiotopoulou, Vicky ; Brennan, Geraldine ; Hess, Julianne
The Shift: Move from "Waste Management" to "Value Lifecycle Management" through circular strategies which deliver strategic autonomy, resilience and competitiveness. The Goal: Establish Europe as the global leader in High-R Manufacturing by 2050. The EFFRA Circularity Working Group (WG) has developed a White Paper that positions circularity as a core driver of Europe’s industrial competitiveness, resilience, and net-zero ambitions. The document provides a critical assessment of the current state of European manufacturing, highlighting persistent linear practices, recycling-heavy but reuse- and remanufacturing light systems, fragmented reverse logistics, and R&I funding models that still prioritise vertical silos over systemic circular solutions. The WG sets out a clear vision for 2026–2034 and beyond, calling for a shift from circular pilots at the margins to advanced circular strategies as the default model for European manufacturing. Central to this vision are high-value “R strategies” (reuse, remanufacturing, refurbishment), OEM-led remanufacturing embedded in core business models, factories retooled for disassembly and reintegration, and operational digital product passports and data frameworks enabling high-value retention circularity through life-extension. Who is this brief for? This brief is intended for the key actors involved in shaping and implementing Europe’s industrial transformation. The White Paper provides concrete R&I and policy recommendations, including making FP10 a true circular economy agenda, linking funding to verified life extension and service revenues, deploying regional reverse-logistics hubs, developing EU-wide circularity indicators, and embedding circular skills and microcredentials across manufacturing. Overall, the work of the Circularity WG positions Europe to move from linear survival to circular competitiveness, establishing a single circular market which positions the EU industrial base to evolve into global leaders in advanced circular manufacturing.

Zirkuläre Wertschöpfungsnetzwerke (2026)
Boos, Wolfgang ; Hoeborn, Gerrit ; Klapper, Lars ; Schröer, Tobias ; Perau, Martin ; Junglas, Sebastian  ; Janßen, Jokim
AI-Based Assistance Systems in Smart Distribution Grids (2026)
Boersma, Sijmen Robert ; Kandiah, Kajan ; Kahveci, Cansu ; Song, Philip ; Nguyen, Xuan-Anh ; Stroh, Max-Ferdinand ; Boos, Wolfgang
The increasing decentralization and digitalization of energy distribution systems pose significant challenges to the management of operational and maintenance processes. The integration of renewable energy sources and the resulting dynamic grid conditions necessitate more adaptive, efficient, and technologically advanced workforce management (WFM) solutions. This work presents a systematic approach to modeling WFM processes tailored to the needs of modern smart grids. Based on a detailed evaluation of modeling languages and a requirements analysis informed by industry workshops, Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) was identified as the most suitable formalism. An iterative development process was established, combining user story specification, process modeling, validation, and equirement refinement. The resulting WFM processes integrate real-time reactivity and AI-based decision support mechanisms. These include intelligent task classification, personnel selection, and resource planning, enabling human operators to make faster, more consistent decisions in dynamic grid environments. The work lays the foundation for a digitalized, flexible WFM-System that addresses the future demands of sustainable and secure energy distribution.
Verkaufsmethoden im Solution-Selling (2026)
Nickel, Jan-Philipp ; Spatzier, Timo ; Beckmann, Max ; Boos, Wolfgang ; Evers, David ; Heckler, Roman ; Rief, Matthias ; Schmitz, Christian ; Schrank, Regina ; Wieseke, Jan
Reinforcement Learning for Intercropping Sequences (2026)
Sarawinsky, Stefan ; Schaller, Kai ; Kandiah, Kajan
Improving the sustainability of production systems requires decision support methods that can solve the problem of optimizing the combination of resources under ecological, operational, and compatibility constraints. This challenge arises in agriculture and manufacturing, particularly in Circular Industrial Production Systems (CIPS), where the creation of value depends on the coordinated use of materials, processes and resources, while minimizing waste and environmental impact. As production environments become more complex and dynamic, traditional rule-based or static optimization approaches struggle to cope with combinatorial decision spaces and evolving system constraints. To address this issue, the authors use intercropping as an example proxy domain with high complexity that mirrors these combinatorial challenges and compatibility constraints. This paper therefore presents a Deep Q-Network (DQN)-based Reinforcement Learning (RL) approach embedded in a domain-specific simulation environment for planning intercropping sequences. The RL-based Decision Support System (DSS) learns to maximize an aggregated reward comprising agronomic quality indicators and binary user preference feedback. Results from a simulation demonstrate a consistent convergence and structured long-term policy learning in complex combinatorial decision spaces. Beyond agriculture, this framework shows how RL-based sequencing policies can help CIPS facing similar optimization problems involving material combinations, process compatibility, and sustainability trade-offs.
Toward A Coherent Definition Of The Unified Namespace In Industry 4.0 (2026)
Simons, Janis ; Igelmund, Fabian ; Hagenow, Luke ; Reck, Jonas ; Radbruch, Niklas ; Schröer, Tobias ; Katsioupis, Paul
The Unified Namespace (UNS) has gained attention in academia and industry as an enabling concept for real-time data integration, event-driven architectures (EDAs), and semantic interoperability in Industry 4.0. However, the concept is marked by divergent interpretations and inconsistent terminology. This paper systematically analyzes existing UNS publications, identifies and classifies recurring characteristics, and proposes a synthesized definition. Establishing a unified definition is essential to provide orientation for the ongoing conceptual discourse. The UNS is defined as a logically centralized, semantically structured integration layer that exposes real-time industrial information across enterprise systems, emphasizing standardized addressing, event publication and subscription, and technology independence to form a consistent basis for research and practice.

Strukturierung regionaler Produktionsökosysteme für die multidimensionale Kreislaufwirtschaft (2026)
Schrank, Regina ; Nickel, Jan-Philipp ; Kotzur, Philipp
