The Unified Namespace (UNS) has gained attention in academia and industry as an enabling concept for real-time data integration, event-driven architectures (EDAs), and semantic interoperability in Industry 4.0.
However, the concept is marked by divergent interpretations and inconsistent terminology. This paper systematically analyzes existing UNS publications, identifies and classifies recurring characteristics, and proposes a synthesized definition. Establishing a unified definition is essential to provide orientation for the ongoing conceptual discourse. The UNS is defined as a logically centralized, semantically structured integration layer that exposes real-time industrial information across enterprise systems, emphasizing standardized addressing, event publication and subscription, and technology independence to form a consistent basis for research and practice.
