Based on a systematic literature review, different approaches to modularization of IT system landscapes were analyzed. Manufacturing companies (MFRs) are increasingly extending their
portfolios with services and data-driven services (DDS) to differentiate themselves from competitors, tap new revenue potential, and gain competitive advantages through digitization and the subsequently generated data. Nonetheless, DDS fail more often than traditional industrial services and products within the first year on the market. Particularly, companies are failing to sell DDS successfully and efficiently with their existing (multi-level) distribution structures. Surprisingly, there is a lack of scientific research addressing this issue. Since there are currently no holistic models for an end-to-end description of distribution-tasks for DDS in the manufacturing industry, this paper contributes to a task-oriented reference model for mapping interactions in the multi-level distribution management. Therefore, a case study research approach is used, to identify and describe the interactions in the multi-level distribution management of DDS, as well as to develop a regulatory framework for MFRs and their multi-level distribution management. This research uses the established theoretical framework of Service-Dominant-Logic to address the co-creation in multi-level distribution management of DDS. As a result, this paper identifies different interaction variants as well as the need for a new management function with 4 main and 14 basic tasks.
Industrial manufacturers faced and mastered several economic challenges and disruptive changes in the past. In particular, changes to business models emerge very slowly, whereas crises such as the banking crisis or covid-19 outbreak lead to significant short-term effects and are difficult to manage.
Over the past year, the world experienced an unprecedented form of disruption due to the global covid-19 pandemic. Compared to former economic crises, the implications of social distancing, lockdowns, and supply chain shortages triggered a rapid economic and societal disruption at a global scale, which impacted all sectors and levels of society.
For a holistic understanding of the impact of the current and former crises on industrial manufacturers, the Institute for Industrial Management at RWTH Aachen and BearingPoint conducted a survey as well as expert interviews to investigate the scope and type of affects for industrial manufacturers with a strong focus on service business. Based on this a framework to successfully address these new challenges and – also – opportunities was developed.
The evaluation of the maturity level of the participating companies has provided an initial insight into the degree of implementation and the upcoming challenges of Industrie 4.0 in Mexico. The assessment shows that Mexican companies have built the necessary foundation to start their digital transformation. Challenges now lie in establishing an integrated IT landscape that makes it possible to generate a digital shadow of the entire company. In order to leverage the potential of this technological development, it is necessary to work in parallel on an even more flexible organizational structure and an innovation-promoting Culture.
In order to strategically plan the digital transformation of a manufacturing company, a detailed analysis of the company's maturity level must be carried out. The basic dimensions of such an analysis were presented in the present paper. The Industrie 4.0 Maturity Index offers a framework that identifies approximately 50 individual capabilities required for the systematic implementation of Industrie 4.0 and groups them into the four dimensions discussed in this paper. Only an analysis of a company's key processes at this level of detail can form the basis for a sound investment decision and a roadmap that outlines the steps towards its digital transformation for the upcoming years.
