During the last years, the fourth industrial revolution has reached the Mexican industries, bringing with it many disruptive technologies that optimize processes and improve the overall performance of the different companies. However, the current organizational mismatch that prevails between the businesses and the industrie 4.0 demands has generated a lot of turbulence within the Mexican automotive sector.
In these times of change and where the new normal is the VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) world, organizations are constantly experiencing the permanent challenges of the digital era. Political instability, changing needs, strong competition, and the increased customers' control and power, are some of the factors that have urged the automotive supply chain to meet the industrie 4.0 requirements. Most of the companies have been allocating their resources in the development, acquisition, and implementation of new technologies in their production; nonetheless, they have neglected that one of the most critical challenges is the strengthening and adaptation of current leadership functions and competences. In addition to the technological and organizational modifications, the leadership development approach and the traits, skills, and behaviors which are targeted must be adjusted in order prepare future leaders for the previously mentioned challenges. Most of the Mexican automotive companies stand at the introductory stage of the industrie 4.0 transformation. The lack of digital knowledge and the resistance to change are have created a significant leadership gap at high hierarchical levels. Hence, it is vital that the top management is aware of the future leadership styles and how these must be adopted in their systems to achieve continuous organizational development.
The purpose of the master thesis is to develop a new leadership model that meets the requirements of the industrie 4.0 and which serves as a guide that supports organizations in the process of transforming into digital factories. The main topics of the paper will be: Leadership 4.0, which will propose the skills and behaviors that will allow current leaders to remain competitive in the short-run; Leadership development 4.0, will introduce the new ways of developing the up-and-coming leaders; Organization 4.0, will detail the changes that the company must implement to align the human capital with the technologies and the organizational elements (structure, strategy, culture, etc.).
