Development of a profile-based methodology for IT-OT Integration Assessment in Manufacturing

  • The Future of Internet of Things, Service and People (IoTSP) for the industrial sector lies in integrating two worlds - information technology and operation technology. This integration will boost productivity, enhance reliability, save energy and costs, generate new revenue opportunities through innovative business models. Today Industry 4.0 ist very important. With Pandemics sourrounding our well being, it is important to imbibe digitization, paperless work, networking and Internet of their maximum potentials. The Benefits of integrating Information Technology (IT) and Operation (OT) are saving space, requiring less energy, less costs, better overall performances, less cables, lower deployment time, etc. So what is Operational Technology and how is it so crucial? Operational Technology (OT) comprises of the shop floor systems, which support the physical value adding processes through supervising and controlling hard and software. And what is Information Technology (IT), Information Technology (IT) is synonymus with the office floor systems, which capture, process, and provide data and information within the enterprise. IT includes ERP (Enterprise Ressource Planning) and CRM (Costumer Relationship Management) systems and supports the management's decision-making processes. IT-OT-Intergration describes the merging of operational technology with information technology, so that real time data can effortlessly be transfered between these systems. Challenges expected in integration of these technologies relate to the fact that OT Systems lack Interfae Standards of IT Systems. This results in Technological Silos and untapped Data. This Thesis will focus on converging both of these domains by creating a Profile based on the relevant characteristics and their Utility Potentials. To make a merger between the world of IT systems which assume Humans as end point and the world of Engeneering (Operation Technology) designed for controlling devices. To make a morphology of the IT and OT integration, we need to do an extensive Literature Research on the two domains i.e IT and OT finding out in the process their relevant defnitions, what type of interfaces they use and the different Protocols that are frequently being employed. Doing a Market Research of the present scenario of OT and IT Systems. Further Doing Literature Review of the State of Art of the System that are being used. From there collecting the relevant IT and OT Integration chracteristics which will be filled in the Morphological Box. Finally the Utility Potentials will be mapped to the Morphological Box and then the methodology will be validated on the Use cases.
